The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter 🏹💔

Poetic Fragments No. 3

This is about a burro I once knew.🫏

This line comes from the title of Carson McCullers's The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, a Southern Gothic novel I picked up for a dollar at a library sale many years ago. It's been one of my favorites ever since.

Published in 1940, when she was only 23 years old, the novel explores loneliness, unrequited love, and the desire to be seen and understood. Its characters search for connection, often without recognizing the loneliness in one another.

McCullers lived quite an exciting life, despite suffering from numerous health concerns throughout. She was known to pal around with other Southern writers such as Tennessee Williams and Truman Capote. Unfortunately, she died at the age of 50 of a brain hemmorage following a stroke.

But here's another interesting bit of literary history. McCullers borrowed the title from The Lonely Hunter, a poem by Scottish writer William Sharp, who published under the female pen name Fiona Macleod. Sharp created this literary identity to explore the more romantic, mystical, and feminine aspects of his imagination, keeping his identity secret for years. 🥀

This is the third and final piece in my Poetic Fragments collection. 🖤
